FAQs about the Singers

Q:  What kinds of people are in the group?
A:
The singers come from throughout the Bay area and represent many different religions, ethnicities and educational backgrounds. The glue that binds them is the desire to make extraordinary music, and to share that music with the people of Tampa Bay.

Q: Can anyone become a member?
A:
Admission is by audition, but there are members with a wide range of skills, and they try not to scare good people away in the audition process. The goal is to help singers improve their skills, and even the most talented in the group work hard to develop their performance.

Q: Do all of the members read music?
A:
Most members do, but to varying degrees.  Some of them don't read music well enough to play a piano concerto, but they can read well enough to learn their part, especially if they work hard.  And TOS is a very committed and hard-working group.

Q:  Are the Tampa Oratorio Singers paid for their performances?
A:  All of the singers are volunteers, with the exception of a small number of soloists who are paid for specific concert work.  To continue to operate, the group relies solely on donor gifts and contributions from corporate sponsors.
